WHMIS (Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System) training is a crucial component of workplace safety in Canada. It is a national communication standard that ensures employees are informed about the hazards associated with the chemicals and products they may encounter on the job. The training covers key elements such as understanding WHMIS labels, recognizing pictograms, reading and interpreting Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and knowing the proper procedures for handling, storing, and disposing of hazardous materials. Employers are legally responsible for providing this training to their workers, and employees must complete it as part of their workplace health and safety orientation. The goal of WHMIS training is to reduce the risk of injuries, illnesses, and accidents caused by hazardous substances in the workplace.
In 2015, Canada updated WHMIS to align with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS), creating what is now referred to as WHMIS 2015. This update improved consistency in the classification and labeling of hazardous products both nationally and internationally. As part of this system, workers learn to identify hazard classes and categories, understand the meaning of standardized symbols, and respond appropriately to emergencies involving dangerous materials. WHMIS training must be reviewed and updated regularly—especially when new hazards are introduced or when an employee changes roles. This ensures that all workers remain informed and capable of protecting themselves and others from chemical hazards in the workplace.
